In New Orleans, a pair of undead serial killers is about to turn Mardi Gras into a horror show - unless the immortal hitman Bones can hunt them down first. From Jeaniene Frost comes a thrilling novella featuring characters from her New York Times bestselling Night Huntress series. Originally appeared in the anthology Unbound.

MY REVIEW:

This prequel to the Night Huntress series did not disappoint!

This fast-paced story takes place in New Orleans during Mardi Gras in 2004. A drunk guy named Eric goes on a haunted house tour and flirts with a hot brunette. He suggests they go back to his hotel, but she insists that her place is closer. When she says that she is going to eat him, it isn’t exactly what Eric has in mind! It turns out that this woman, Delphine LaLaurie, and her husband are ghouls and are preying on tourists in New Orleans. The same thing happened 40 years earlier, when the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, Marie Laveau, was away overseas. Bones, a vampire, has been summoned by Marie (or so he thinks) to hunt down Delphine and her husband and put an end to their killing spree.

I love the dark world that Jeaniene Frost has created! I really like Bones and learning the backstory of how he was sired. He has a bit of a sarcastic edge, but he also seems to have a heart as evidenced by his concern for Becca. I am very intrigued by the ghouls, and it is a shame that this is the last that we’ll see of Jelani but his death was a noble one. At this point, I’m not too fond of Romiel but want to know more about him.

Narrator Tavia Gilbert is new to me, and I thought her voice was a little too feminine for Bones. However, overall, I liked the attitude that she brought to the character and I liked Bones’ British accent. Here is a sample of the narration:

I can’t wait to read more of this series!

MY RATING:
4 stars!! It was really good, and you should put it on your TBR if you enjoy urban fantasy or paranormal romances.
